The Misadventures of F!sh Keeping

Created On:

I keep having misadventures in baby fish keeping, particularly at night. What happened this time? You won't believe it, but I found a molly fry hiding in the plant I have in the corner of the tank.

The molly is not in this photo, but this is the plant he was in.

The baby mollies were born on May 3, 2018, and they were all living a breeder net; so it was pretty strange to see one in the big aquarium! I put my fish-catching net into his plant to try to catch him, and he was gone instantly! I did not know what happened to him, but I decided to keep an eye out for him in the future. It was about time for bed now, so I brushed my teeth and said good-night to my parents. Before I turned off the light in my aquarium, I looked one more time to see if I could spot the little fry. I thought I saw some something hanging off a leaf, and as I looked closer, you guessed it - the baby molly was back! Once again I grabbed my net and tried to catch him. Over and over he got away, and every time he did I saw where he had gone. Finally he escaped completely out of sight. I thought he was eaten by another fish and I would never see him again. I began to feel a bit sad, but then, all at once, I found him! He was underneath a plant. I have no idea how he got there, but there was no time to ponder. At last I scooped him up and put him in the breeder net with his siblings. The whole process must have taken about twenty minutes, and it was very tiring. All the effort was worth it though! I am so glad he is safe.

I have moved all of the molly fry into a 1.5 gallon tank so that they have more room to grow. When they get too big for their new home, I will take them to the fish store to be sold. I will most likely have them a few more weeks, because it will probably take awhile for them to reach that stage.

I am also having an algae problem. My decorations and the back of my tank are mostly covered up in the disgusting green stuff. I asked my friend about what to do; He knows a lot about fish and he is a lot more experienced than me. He said to try algae fizz tabs.

"They're a pretty good way to get rid of algae, and they don't cost much," he told me. He also explained how they work. You take the desired decoration out of the aquarium and put in in a large container (such as a bowl or a pot). Then you fill the container with water. Next you drop in a fizz tab and let the magic happen! DISCLAIMER: I tried the fizz tabs on June 17, and they did nothing. The box also says they contain copper, which is harmful to fish. I cleaned off all of the ornaments very well with a toothbrush and warm water, so my fish are not hurt. I do not recommend algae fizz tabs.

Fish keeping can be pretty misadventurous, but it is loads of fun!

NOTE FROM 2020: Did I even know what "misadventures" were? Anyway, I hope you are enjoying the wholesome blog so far.
